4 DIY Home Appliance Maintenance and Repair Tips

Cleaning out the drain and filter on your dishwasher is one way to keep home appliances working their best.

Remember when we washed our clothes and dishes by hand? Those days are long over now that high-efficiency appliances have taken over. In many cases, our home appliances do a better job than our hands ever could. But like anything, we need to maintain them for maximum efficiency. While Canadian appliances stores such as Genier's offer all their customers with appliance parts and repairs, there is the occasion where a simple maintenance task will do the trick in getting your appliance to run smoothly again.

1. Localizing Your Laundry Problem

One of the most common problems with older washers and dryers is when the heating or other electrical elements fail to function properly. Sometimes this can be a simple case of a malfunctioning fuse, or in the case of the dryer, the vent duct being clogged by debris. This not only causes your clothes to come out damp, but can also be a fire hazard.

Make sure to clean your dryer's lint trap regularly. You should also clean your dryer's exhaust system by removing the vent hose at the back of the machine and gently running a brush through the vent to get at the trapped lint. Use a vacuum to get at the remaining debris.

If your washer or dryer fails to spin or tumble, it's possible that the drive belt has worn out. Before you go opening up your machine to replace it, first see if your appliance store can help with both repair and parts.

2. Solving Your Dishwasher Dilemma

  • From hard water scales to soap scum and food particles, a dirty dishwasher is not going to help get your dishes and cutlery clean. That's why it's important to regularly clean and deodorize one of your most used kitchen appliances by following these steps:
  • Remove food and gunk from the drain located at the bottom of your dishwasher
  • Place 2 cups of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl on the top rack of your dishwasher then run it through the hot water cycle
  • Sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of your dishwasher and rinse with a short hot water cycle

3. Keeping Your Fridge From Leaking Frigid Air

If you notice your fridge is not cooling properly, or that its motor is running at a higher rate than usual, it simply could mean that there is air escaping. Make sure to check all seals around your fridge and freezer doors and clean them out by using a toothbrush with baking soda and water and get into the creases. If your seals need to be replaced, contact your appliance repair shop to have the job done properly.

4. Getting Cook Ranges to Stay Fired Up

To ensure that your gas range works to the best of its ability, GE Appliances suggests you regularly wipe your gas burner heads when cleaning your range top (make sure the gas is turned off first). Remove the burner head from the range and soak it upside down in a solution of mild liquid detergent and hot water for 20-30 min. If the residue does not rinse off completely, scrub in soap and water with a soft brush or a plastic scouring pad.
