How Long Will Your Canadian Appliances Last?

Do some of your Canadian appliances need repairs? Before calling a repairman, check to see if your appliances are at the end of their lifespan first.

For many Vernon homeowners, Canadian appliances, especially those in the kitchen, have become a necessity. We rely on these machines to keep our home running efficiently, and enjoy watching them in action. But when one of these prized possessions breaks down, it’s hard not to get emotionally upset at the prospect of washing dishes by hand or hanging clothes outside to dry. Before you call a repairman, consider the life expectancy of your home appliances first. This may help you determine if your trusty appliance can be saved or if its time is up.

It’s important to note that the life expectancy of an appliance can vary based on the brand, the model, and the frequency of routine maintenance.

Electric Dryers

On average, these appliances will run for about 14 years, but can potentially make it up to 18 years without needing a replacement.

Gas Dryers

Although efficient, gas dryers fall a little short compared to their electric counterpart. On average, they’ll run for about 13 years, but may keep spinning for as long as 16 years.

Washing Machines

Although washers and dryers come as a set, washing machines typically don’t live as long as their mate. On average, these can’t-live-without appliances last for about 12 years, but, if treated well, can survive for as long as 16 years.

Dishwashers

If you’ve ever washed your dishes by hand, you know what the value of a great dishwasher is. If routinely maintained, dishwashers can last for up to 16 years, but the average life expectancy of a dishwasher is only roughly 12 years.

Electric Ranges

On average, these cooktops can keep on cooking for about 16 years. If well taken care of, a 20-year lifespan wouldn’t be unheard of.

Gas Ranges

This powerhouse of a cooking surface leads the pack. With an average life expectancy of 19 years, many well cared for gas ranges can stick around for up to 23 years.

Range Hood

Range hoods, on average, last for 14 years, but if regularly cleaned and cared for, can be expected to survive for at least 19 years.

Refrigerators

Probably the most common of all Canadian appliances, fridges can be expected to last for up to 18 years if regular maintenance is performed. If not, the average life expectancy of a refrigerator would be 14 years.

Microwaves

Surprisingly, the average life expectancy of a microwave is only eight years. If you take care of your microwave and follow the user’s manual to a tee, you should be able to get 10 years’ worth of use out of it.
