Spring Cleaning Tips: How to Make Your Kitchen Appliances Shine

Follow these tips on how to make your stainless steel, cooktop, ventilation and other kitchen appliances look their best.

Spring is finally here and with it comes a renewed sense of energy and purpose. As the snow melts and trees reveal their buds, we may be inspired to get out the scrub bucket and mop and clean our homes.

While the air outside smells fresh and clean, the same might not be said about inside and especially in your kitchen. Besides common cleaning practices, use these tips to make your kitchen appliances shine like new.

Take the stain out of stainless steel

Easter leftovers may have left fingerprints, streaks and food smears all over your stainless steel appliances such as fridges, ranges and dishwashers.

Start by wetting a cloth or dishrag with clean water. Wring the excess water out and then add a drop of dish soap. Wipe the appliance in the same direction as the grain. Rinse and repeat, and then take a dry cloth to buff the surface.

For stainless steel gas ranges, remove the grates and any griddles, as well as burner heads and caps and use a non-abrasive sponge to wash them, or soak them in warm water for 20-30 minutes to remove harder stains. Make sure the components are dry before you replace them.

Clean the cooktop on cook ranges

For cooked-on stains on your ceramic or glass cooktop, try making a paste of baking soda and warm water so that it resembles toothpaste and apply it to the stain. Leave it for 10 minutes and then wipe with a damp soft fibre cloth.

For general cleaning, wipe the surface with a soft cloth containing a small amount of dish soap and water. Rinse and dry the surface with a dry towel then apply some undiluted white vinegar to get the hard water stains out. Buff with a dry cloth.

You can use the same method to remove stains on induction cooktops.

Get into those nooks and crannies

While you’ll want the surface of your cooking appliance to shine, you’ll also want to clean all the parts from top to bottom. This includes inside your oven, the drawer, as well as the sides of your appliance.

When cleaning your oven’s drawer, make sure you use a non-corrosive cleaner (no chlorine or bleach) and a non-abrasive scrubber.

Filter your filter

Often neglected, it’s important to clean your kitchen ventilation and this includes removing the grease that can get trapped inside your range hood and in particular, the exhaust fan filter.

 To de-grease your filter:

  • Remove the filter from the hood (read your range instructions on how to do this safely)
  • Fill your sink or a large bucket with very hot or boiling water
  • Add a tablespoon of dishwashing soap and a ¼ cup of baking soda and mix
  • Place filter in water mixture and let soak for 10-20 minutes
  • Scrub filter with a non-abrasive brush
  • Rinse and dry and then replace filter
